Bearing the Sins of Our Fore-mothers

Besides wanting to literally chop off the sagging baby-belly pooch I developed while carrying an 8.25lbs, a 9lbs and 10.5lbs baby respectively, I was also deathly afraid of become diabetic like my father or having high cholesterol like my mother.

My father has, so far, lost muscle tissue, teeth and his eyesight (officially legally blind) due to diabetic complications. In May 2010 he was hospitalized for loss of power and feeling on his right side and an MRI revealed that he’d had a stoke sometime back and hadn’t even known! Further blood work also revealed a high blood sugar level despite daily medication and high cholesterol levels as well, which is common for diabetics.

My mother has been slim all her life but due to her food choices and sedentary lifestyle still has high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Both of my younger siblings (twins) have also been diagnosed with high cholesterol as mere teenagers despite being very thin as well.

Doing Doubles and Seeing Double

Bearing all that in mind I figured I’d do a program that was designed to keep my muscles “confused” and growing while burning fat. You know, the one that comes on in infomercials at night and on weekends promising to get you ripped in 90 days?

Yeah, well I committed to push, pull, kick and squat through 6 days a week sometimes twice a day thinking (praying) that more exercise means greater fat loss, and quite possibly achieve the results I wanted sooner than later.

I pushed myself hard, sometimes to the point where I’d get a little dizzy but I kept going…

I didn’t miss any of the workouts, I followed the meal plan, I lost fat too but, it wasn’t enough to justify my long arduous workouts or bland food. The results didn’t inspire me to repeat the program.

Besides, there’s no way I’d be willing to carve out 60-90 minutes a day, 6 days a week mind you, to do long intense exercises with 3 kids to raise, a husband to entertain and a business to run for another 90 days… much less FOR LIFE.

Well they are learning that the real culprit for fat and obesity could be the very foods we thought were “healthy” for us because of what has to be loaded in to those whole grain and low fat foods to make them tasty to consume: SUGAR! And hidden sugar at that. Sugar by different names and in forms that send our fat storing genes into over drive.

I’d always heard that great abs are made in the kitchen and not in the gym. But what exactly that meant was a mystery. What I thought it meant was eating rice-cakes, diet drinks, oatmeal and lots of dry chicken breast. Not exactly what I was looking forward to, since I knew I could never stick to those unsavory choices!

But after working out so hard and still not getting the results I wanted I decided to look into things a little further…

I couldn’t stand looking at myself naked anymore much less get dressed or undressed in front of my own dear husband.

Sure, I could have continued to camouflage my trouble spots and accentuate my more attractive features like the makeover shows preach but I figure if I’m going work out really hard, and eat bland diet food, I might as well get ripped!

When that didn’t happen after doing double work outs up to 4 times out of the 6 days a week schedule. I found out that fat storage is controlled by hormones in the body that are triggered by blood sugar levels. Then on  a deeper level, blood sugar levels are raised to different degrees by what we eat… Duh, right?!

Do Less to Lose More?

Up until recently it has been said that eating less and working out more is the way to losing fat and firming up flab. But, what I discovered was I was working out too much, also called over-training, then eating too much of the types of foods that kept me dependent on too much exercise.

      Charles, thank you for your comment. Can you expand on what you mean by “account for that” when it comes to cholesterol?

    I learned of you through my teacher Makeda. :)
    Congratulations. You are awesome and should be proud.

    I have a strange story, in a way, I don’t have HBP, Diab, High Chol, Nothing only slightly anemic. Dr’s call it slight but it’s enough where as I cannot donate blood, since high school.

    2001, my husband & I had our third child, at the time I was 36, he 37, our children son 17, & daughter, 11yrs.

    I gained 60lbs total during pregnancy.

    During the 9mos I was put on total bed rest due to incredible pain ALL over my body. My feet, Toes spread so wide that my feet burst open several times *smh*

    Dr.’s told me, later, that I had hyper-produced the hormone that regulates a Woman’s bones to spread, for childbirth. They said I had to wait for it to leave, nothing they could do. I Refused to get “water” medicine, at first because I breastfeed, later because I don’t respond well to medicine. I didn’t want to take a chance.

    in 2009, Nov, my bones started to painfully, slowly close. Long story short, I asked if I could exercise, they said yes I did EVERYday. I lost 150lbs by Christmas last year…, I lost another 30 lbs this year, from Jan till 3wks ago.
    I have gained muscle and I feel stronger, but am dissatisfied with the Length of time it is taking, {I have another 100lbs+ to lose :( } at this rate, I’ll hit my mark in 2yrs or so.
    I need it to happen quicker, but STILL nutritiously. I DON”T DO DRUGS NOR DIETS. NEVER HAVE.

    No protein, no “SUGAR BARS”, it cracked me up when you said that they were TOO sweet. lol I Agree.
    So…,? What I NEED to know is what do you think? Will my body Ever Tighten up again? Or has it been abused too long?
    I’m pretty satisfied with my upper body progress, well not so much in my arms, or my abdomen, but, my Lower body..? That I’ve sat on for 8Years?, wow! *smh*

    I’ve gone, so far from a 5x to a 1x {28~30? to 18~20} my skin, is still pretty good but, I’m concerned that this NEXT last 100lbs will ruin the elasticity. Or the Other way around.. ;b Especially since I can’t, I’m afraid to…?, work as HARD as I was before. Due to injuries.

    My exercise day was ALL day from 5AM till evening when I lost the original 150lbs. I WAS VERY slow and would take breaks often AT First.. at veggies and chicken, grilled or baked breast, fish, Salmon, and Tilapia{YUCK! I heard what you said about it. *smh*}, and Buffalo. Red Snapper when I could afford it. :) AND Lemonade!! Or Lemon WATER as my family put it. Lol but NOW they tell me if Daddy make it too sweet.. ;) No starches, INCLUDING my beloved bread, 12 grains IF we eat any.
    Oh AND I started to eat breakfast, which I used to skip until lunch then dinner BEFORE 6:00PM and control portions. My 20yr old daughter lost about 90lbs too. My baby, 9yr old just gets taller but is GAINING weight in her upper body. :( Help.

    I walked around the park’s track, 4x, in 42min’s last yr, on April 16th, I went down to 14min’s, by Snow, about Nov 1st, NOW I can go around in 9:39min’s :) {I STOPPED walking, AND the gym too, because I had Physical therapy/right shoulder, & back/} then I’d stretch and dance at home. I too home school, and this is playing havoc on my schedules…

    Do you think that your program can help me? Will it Make me lose TOO FAST Then have the sagging SKIN problem?
    {I started to eat burgers and bread again THIS year because I was losing so fast that my skin start sagging in my inner thigh area and my upper, under arm, Triceps region. :( }
